I’m advising a student on a short film she’s writing. Sent her this email. Thought I’d share. Seems to cover most any story, ever.

What is her problem?
What is her desire / what does she want MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE?
What is her need, that she’s not aware of?
What is she afraid of… desperately afraid of… a fear that keeps her from taking action…
How does she conquer that fear and get what she needs?

I suppose you already have a “REALLY?” stamp for things like:
He had a black belt around his waist and a red cap on his head… REALLY? ‘around his waist’ and ‘on his head’??? Who’da thunk?
YOU ARE SO SO SO RIGHT!
I was going to have a “DUUUUH!” stamp but thought that might be a tad on the less-than-kind side…
So you don’t mind telling me my screenplay sucks but you shy away from telling me I’m an idiot. Hmm, not sure what to think about that.. :C)
The smartest guy in the world can still write a poor screenplay.
And, really good writers can also write a poor screenplay from time to time. You don’t always knock the ball out of the park.
